Children's Center Students Support Hurricane Harvey Relief

October 2, 2017

On August 25th, Hurricane Harvey made landfall onto Texas, becoming one of the most devastating storms to hit the United States.  Many of us who live far away from the devastation have been struggling with how to best help those in need.

On Monday, August 28th, the staff met with the children of the Growing Tree Children’s center, the childcare of United Methodist Children’s Services to talk about what was happening with Hurricane Harvey. Many of the children were concerned about what they had seen on the news, and the staff of the Children’s Center wanted to be sure that the children had the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings.  From that conversation came a clear desire from the children that they wanted to help.

Childcare Director Theresa Purifoy said:

"When we talked to the kids about how they thought they wanted to help the children and families of the Houston area, the kids originally thought about sending them a boat to help rescue people trapped in their homes.  We shared with the kids about how difficult that would be and how perhaps raising money was the best thing to help families at this point."

The students have been raising money this week from family, friends, staff members at the agency, and even other agencies that share building space.  The students shared that they had seen many families on the news that had lost everything and now had no home and they wanted to do something to help those who were struggling.

‘It is great to see how excited the children are about this project.’ Rev. Tina Itson, Director of Development, said. ‘As an agency that serve families in poverty through affordable housing, quality childcare, access to resources, and community engagement, we know that the families that we serve have limited resources and struggle themselves to meet basic needs.  It is moving to see our childcare children doing what they can to help others who are struggling themselves.’

So far the children have raised over $400 for Hurricane Harvey relief, and more is on the way.  The funds will be sent to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) for their relief efforts as 100% of the funds will be used to support relief efforts.
